About
The youngest of the ferries of the Rive Ouse, Bishopthorpe Ferry was initially opened and operated by a Mr Dixon towards the end of the 1700s. Mr Dixon, initially an eel-er, began providing ad-hoc trips across the Ouse between Bishopthorpe and Fulford Ings before the ferry eventually became a more formal endeavour.
Though not listed, the ferryman’s cottage is recorded as a local monument in York Historic Environment Record.
